Sanjay Dutts wife Manyata would now fight elections

Sanjay Dutt's plea to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections was on Tuesday rejected by the Supreme Court which refused to stay his conviction in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

"We are not inclined to suspend his conviction," a Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan said.

"It is not a fit case to grant stay of conviction," the Bench also comprising Justices P Sathasivam and R M Lodha said.

Dutt had been fielded by the Samajwadi Party as its candidate for Lucknow Lok Sabha seat.

The Court said that Dutt was convicted for "serious offence" under the Arms Act by a Mumbai TADA Court.

The Bench said that the actor's case could not be equated with that of BJP leader Navjot Singh Sidhu whose conviction and sentence in a road rage case was stayed by the apex court to enable him to contest the Amritsar by- elections in 2007.

The Bench said that Dutt was disqualified from contesting the elections under the Section 8 (3) of the Representation of People Act, which debars a person sentenced to two or more years of imprisonment, from standing for polls.

Talking about the decision Sanjay Dutt said he abides by the Supreme Court's decision against suspending his conviction in a criminal case to enable him to fight Lok Sabha elections, but added that Lucknow remains "my home".

"I respect the decision of the honourable court. I am a law-abiding citizen and I really appreciate that the honourable court absolved me of TADA (Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act) charges," Dutt told reporters here.

He, however, added: "I am not going to leave Lucknow. Lucknow is my home whether I fight this election or not. This is my father's place and I owe a lot to Lucknow. I am not going to leave Lucknow no matter what happens."

Asked if his wife Manyata would now fight elections, he said: "This decision would be taken by (Samajwadi Party leaders) Mulayam Singhji and Amar Singhji. It's my duty that I stand besides them lifelong.

"Whosoever will be the new (Samajwadi Party) candidate will be my candidate. This is my seat and will remain forever," Dutt added.

The Samajwadi Party had earlier announced Dutt as its candidate for the Lucknow seat. If he cannot contest, then his wife will be the candidate, the party had later said.

Lucknow was represented in the outgoing Lok Sabha by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee of the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP), who is not contesting this time due to advancing age.

Dutt has been convicted of holding illegal arms in the run-up to the 1993 Mumbai serial bombings.

Padmapriya is all set to enter the world of Hindi cinema

After making her niche in Malayalam and Tamil cinema, actress Padmapriya is all set to enter the world of Hindi cinema with director Chandan Arora’s Striker .

"It is a period movie set in the Mumbai of the 1990s. The movie is based on carom board striker. It has Siddharth (of Rang De Basanti fame), playing the main protagonist and I play a bar owner in the film," Padmapriya told a news agency.

The film also features Vidya Malvade , Nicolette, Seema Biswas and Aditya Pancholi.

Though her first film was Telugu movie 'Seenu Vasanthi Lakshmi' (2003), Padmapriya, an MBA graduate, said she never really worked in Telugu film industry.

The actress said she did the movie for a friend because he was "pestering" her for long. It was done at her "convenience" and during the Christmas vacation.

"I never intended to make a career in films but after the movie was released, offers started pouring in," she said. 'Seenu...' was remake of a Malayalam film. Her first Malayalam movie was 'Kaazhcha' (2004) directed by Blessy. She was cast opposite Mammootty .

In the movie, Padmapriya played the role of a girl's mother who becomes attached to a child orphaned by the Gujarat killer quake, brought home by her husband Mammootty.

Katrina Kaif is a little worried about the bubbly-girl image

British-born actress Katrina Kaif, whose face will now adorn Barbie dolls, says contrary to what people believe her Barbie is not an Indian counterpart of the international brand. She also feels that in many ways it's an endorsement of how kids connect with her.

'I'd call it a fun honour. To have your face on dolls that you've played with from childhood is quite flattering. We've been in negotiation for nearly six months. It finally came together for the 50-year celebration of Barbie,' Katrina told IANS.

'Contrary to what people believe my Barbie is not an Indian counterpart of the international brand. It's an honour because I'm the first Indian to be the face of Barbie. I'll be dressed the way the Barbie is all over the world.

'And I think in many ways it's an endorsement of how kids connect with me. You can't be the face of an international doll unless kids like you. I like that. The thought that kids like me enough to make me a part of their doll collection is very gratifying,' the 24-year-old said.

The actress walked the ramp as the showstopper at a special show dedicated to Barbie at the Lakme Fashion Week here. She sported a small pink dress that the 'Katrina Barbie' will be wearing from September.

With the Barbie image coming to the surface, Katrina is a little worried about the bubbly-girl image that she'd like to change.

'So much for my attempts to move to more mature level as an actor,' laughed the actress. 'I guess Prakash Jha's 'Rajneeti' will take care of that. But I'm very happy being the clean healthy Barbie-girl next door.'

The doll's look and dress were planned in collaboration with Katrina.

'It is quite something, if you think about it. But I'd rather not. I don't want my head to get swollen. For me, it's enough that I was chosen because I reflect a certain bubbly wholesome personality, quite contrary to the 'sexy' tag that I get in net polls and which I'm not very comfortable with,' she said.

Apart from 'Rajneeti', Katrina's other releases this year are debutant director

Shilpa Shetty will probably tie the knot with beau Raj Kundra in October

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty will probably tie the knot with beau Raj Kundra in October this year, say reports. The couple have set a tentative date in October and plan to have a traditional ceremony in India, it is reported.

“I have very traditional views of marriage. I’ve seen my parents maintain a 35-year marriage and I really believe marriages are made in heaven. I’ve always said that the day I decide to tie the knot it is going to be for good,” Shilpa said.

“I have often wondered who the right person would be and I’ve come to realise that for me it is Raj. I’m completely sure he is my soul mate,” she added.Kundra seems as excited about the prospect of marriage as Shilpa.“I have spoken to Shilpa’s parents and we are doing it the Indian way. In India, you don’t get engaged until just before the wedding, so I didn’t go down on one knee to her or anything like that. But we have definitely set a date for this year,” he said.

The couple have been together for two years. They are yet to make an official announcement out of respect for British reality TV star Jade Goody, who passed away March 22. She had appeared with Shilpa on Celebrity Big Brother, sparking an international racism row.

The actress, 33, recently bought a 5 million pound house in Weybridge, Surrey with Kundra. The house has seven bedrooms.Kundra, a 34-year-old millionaire, owns a Dubai-based business and deals in the trading of precious stones and metals.

He has also started to help Shilpa manage her career and is believed to be behind her decision last month to invest 8 million pounds in the cricket team Rajasthan Royals, who were last year’s Indian Premier League winners.

Akshay Kumar hurt himself badly on while working

Akshay Kumar hurt himself badly on while working out at his personal gym at his bungalow in Karjat. Akshay was doing pull-ups on the bar when the rod broke. He injured his hand and hurt his back.

When Vipul Shah heard about it, he rushed to the house and panicked. He was shocked at the bleeding and insisted on cancelling the shoot but Akshay told him to finish the day’s shoot.”

The source adds that Akshay came back to Mumbai in the evening and was back in Karjat on Thursday to resume shooting. “He was treated right there and then in Mumbai. Now he’s able to move around as he resumed shooting from yesterday.”

Vipul Shah confirms Akshay’s accident and says, “While working out, one of the rods broke and Akshay had a bad fall. His elbow got cut badly and was bleeding profusely so I wanted to pack up immediately but Akshay wanted to carry on and he did. He didn’t take any medicines during the shoot.”

Shilpa Shetty went to Britain to buy a house

Apart from wanting to visit her dying foe-turned-friend Jade Goody, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty's concealed reasons for a recent London visit are out. The starlet went to Britain to buy a house.

Shilpa has recently bought a home in Weybridge in Surrey, southeast of London, and is excited about getting married and having kids and bringing them up in the new house.

"I believe in the institution of marriage...I'm dying to have kids, and when you see the Weybridge home, it's huge, it's a great family home, so I can't wait to bring up children there," Shilpa said.

She is dating London-based Indian millionaire Raj Kundra.

Shilpa went to London March 15 but the Goody visit didn't materialise due to her family's objections. Goody died March 22 after losing her battle with cervical cancer.

Bollywood to give us their thoughts on IPL

The IPL (Indian Premiere League) matches will not be held in India but in South Africa this year due to security reasons. Cricket fans across the country seem to be unhappy with the BCCI’s (Board of Council for Cricket in India) decision. We ask Bollywood to give us their thoughts on the matter.

Neetu Chandra

From the game’s point of view, I think that it is even better if we shift to various countries. It sends the rest of the world the message that ‘we have arrived’ and we can challenge anyone, anywhere. Ideally, I would love to have it in India but democracy, the elections and the security issues are all above the game. We need to accept the shift to South Africa, keeping the above in mind.

Sonu Sood

It does not really matter to me. The game is the game, the venue does not matter. India has more important things to sort out and handle other than to take the IPL so seriously. Chill and enjoy the game rather than making an issue of where it is being played.

Pooja Bedi

Personally, I find it quite amusing that the Indian Premiere League series will be held in South Africa! It sounds like the Australian Open tournament being held in Japan!

Chunky Pandey

I have no problem with which part of the world the IPL will be held. All I know is that the craziness is about to begin on April 18. It will be a pleasure to watch the teams battle it out!

Sudhir Mishra

I feel that it would have been better if the IPL was in India but it hardly matters to me as I am not very interested in cricket. However, there are millions of cricket lovers here who would enjoy the matches.

Prateik Babbar

I believe that as long as there is cricket, it does not matter where it is played- it makes me happy! I love the game! I am looking forward to this year’s IPL series.

Neeraj Pandey

Rather than questioning and doubting whether the decision made by the BCCI (Board of Council for Cricket in India) is right or wrong, we should enjoy the game. I personally don’t have a problem; I am looking forward to the games.

Rumi Jaffrey

It should not be an issue because games cater to a global audience. There is nothing wrong with the IPL being shifted to South Africa. We should enjoy the matches rather than panicking about where they are held.

Aishwarya & Barbie is still in the process

aish

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in 1994 won the Miss World title and since then there have been numerous attempts to immortalise the Indian beauty as a Barbie Doll. However due to her professional commitments she had to postpone their endeavour. At the turn of the century by which time Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had become a house hold name the world over Mattel again proposed that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan endorse the Barbie doll but as her prior commitments stretched her for time she had to decline yet again. The turn of the millennium special edition celebrity doll was to feature Naomi Campbel etc.

Here again on the eve of the favorite doll’s 50th Anniversary, Aishwarya is still the most sought after celebrities to be impersonated as a celebrity Barbie. Mattel was also keen to have her walk the ramp on Lakme Fashion Week ’Barbie dolled up’ in a winning design as Single Likeness Barbie , which would be unveiled and auctioned for a charity of her choice. Conversely due to her prior commitments (filming of Vipul Shah’s Action Replay & her being honored Padmashree ) she opted out of the event as she did not want to cause inconvenience to the producer/director anymore while taking time out to this event.

Nonetheless, the earlier ideas have been revised, all the possibilities and talks of a business venture with Aishwarya & Barbie is still in the process of being finalized. So, whether Ash-Barbie doll will hit the shelves or not is something only time will tell.

aamir

After her super successful pairing with Aamir in the film GHAJINI Asin was immediately roped in by the DTH giant for Tata Sky commercial replacing Gul Panag. The news may be already out that Aamir Khan is donning the Sardar avatar for his new ad film for Tata Sky but we have now found out that this ad was shot with Asin too being a part of it with Aamir.

The sources revealed, ’’Aamir has taken special interest in this ad right from deciding upon his costumes, make up, dialogues to even the background music. Through this ad he plans to make his presence felt in the upcoming IPL tournament. Though he doesn’t own an IPL team like his Bollywood counterparts Shah Rukh Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Preity Zinta, this new Tata Sky ad campaign is going to be widely advertised during the IPL matches on the channel showing the tournament. Asin’s inclusion was also Aamir’s idea.’’

Sources further add, ’’All of Aamir’s ad campaigns of Tata Sky have been successful and he hopes to make a bigger splash with the latest one with Asin .’’

Snake is almost the second co-star for Preity Zinta

Preity

When Preity Zinta had to share screen space with a cobra for the lengthy and dramatic climatic sequence in Deepa Mehta’s Heaven On Earth, the director wasn’t really sure whether Preity would be able to carry of the replitilian act without the actor succumbing to the fear factor.

Recalling the harrowing episode from the shooting of her most important film to date Preity says, "I had to put my hand into a hole in the ground, take out this big long snake and not just hold it but also put it around my neck. It was a harrowing in the script.I wondered how I’d manage on camera."

Preity had nightmares before they shot this crucial sequence. "Deepa wasn’t sure I’d be able to do it. So she suggested a digital snake instead of a live one. It would’ve looked as authentic if not more, because the movements of a digital snake would be more controllable."

But somehow Preity’s heart and art were not in the artifice. " The whole film is about getting as real as possible. It didn’t make sense at that late stage to suddenly swerve into a digital kind of filmmaking after I Deepa and I had gone through so much to make sure everything was as authentic as possible."

Preity shot with a real snake. "And it went surprisingly well. After I got over my initial revulsion and fear I was fine with the snake. People wonder how I could take such a long snake around my neck. But isn’t that what true acting is all about?"

The film has episodes from Girish Karnad’s play Naag Mandala where the battered wife imagines the naag devta transforming into a caring loving husband as an alternative life to her nightmarish reality.

"The snake is almost my second co-star after Chand who plays my husband. I couldn’t shirk away from it."

Incidentally not too many of our Bollywood queens have shot with real snakes. Pooja Bedi did in Jagmohan Mundra’s Vish Kanya.

Kangana Ranaut keeping the Bollywood tradition alive

Kangana

This week our hot Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut turned 22 years old and keeping the Bollywood tradition alive there was a big bash with a big birthday cake at Bling, a Mumbai nightclub.

Her close friends and colleagues were there including dear friend Adhyayan Suman and Mugdha Godse, but what was noticeably missing was the bright smile on the beautiful girl’s face as she arrived at the party looking gorgeous in a blue top and hot pants. In fact, to us, she looked like she was going to burst into tears at any moment.

Was it a tiff with lover Adhyayan or just the tension of getting an year older, that is best known to her. What we can say is ‘Happy Birthday , Kangana!’

Asin has learnt some interesting new things from Salman Khan

Asi

Asin says she’s had great fun shooting for “London Dreams’. She calls it a one of a kind experience.

There were numerous pranks, rambling tongue twisters, mugging up of one liners and so on…

She says she has learnt some interesting new things and Salman and especially Ajay Devgan made it even more interesting.

She’s said, “Ajay used to come up with some funny one-liners and tongue twisters which I got to learn from him. It’s one of my best shooting experiences. But I am not in a position to judge but yes as costars I feel they all are fabulous to work with. Both are very different actors and different people.”

Ajay actually seems to have impressed the Southern dame quite a bit.

She’s added, “Everyone knows that Salman is very chilled out but for Ajay, I thought he is a very serious and reserved person. But he is a complete surprise package. He is a complete entertainment channel on the sets.

Ajay is a prankster and I wasn’t aware of that. He actually tried playing a prank on me but it didn’t work so Ajay now has to think of something tougher.”

After coping up with somber Aamir Khan and his perfectionist ways, this sure would like a vacation for Asin. Not bad at all.

Akshay Kumar is gifted with special sense

8x10-ta

After the debacle of his last flick ‘Chandni Chowk To China’, Akshay Kumar will next be seen in a supernatural thriller ‘8 X 10 Tasveer’ directed by Nagesh Kukunoor and produced by Bhushan Kumar. The other cast members include Ayesha Takia, Sharmila Tagore, Javed Jaffrey, Anant Mahadevan and Piah Shah. The musical notes have been given by none other than the Oscar winner A.R Rahman.

The film is a story about young man named Jai Puri played by Akshay is gifted with special sense, i.e. he can go inside the 8X10 Photograph and enter in the past. While his body remains at nausea state, his soul is busy re-discovering the past, when he is out of his nausea he always has a secret related to someone’s past. His father was murdered, and one day he will witness the same scene from an 8X10 photograph.

Akshay had reportedly gone through some dark writings of Edgar Allan Poe and the 19th century French writer Guy de Maupassant to get into the skin of his role for the film.

Since Akshay wanted to understand the world of mystery and science fiction, he chose to make himself aware of supernatural and mystery thrillers which could help him pull off the role better.

Exclusive Remember the stars from old forgotten ads

Shahid Kapur and Ayesha Takia

Applying lip colour, chomping chocolate, gulping milk or driving cars, quite a few actors started out their career modelling for television commercials. At times as a young kid, on others a gawky teenager, compared to their big screen outings, their appearance on commercials is almost unrecognisable. To think you’ve seen them all along. And yet acknowledgement of this familiarity happened only after they achieved Bollywood brand of stardom.Want to check how good your memory is? Let’s see if you remember these stars from these old, forgotten ads.

Shahid Kapur, Ayesha Takia in Complan

He’s a Complan boy. And she’s a Complan girl . Together the fast-growing, cuteness-personified Complan duo turns chocolate drink into a rather healthy proposition. While as kids, Shahid and Ayesha made quite a team of siblings, their endeavour as an adult, romantic Jodi didn’t quite create the same impact in bloopers like Dil Maange More and Fool ’n’ Final.

Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan in Gits

Eating idlis will never be the same again. Long before, the Parineeta star was admired for her classic aura and compelling screen presence, she ventured out to dilate her pupils (reminiscent of Bhool Bhulaiya’s Manjulika) as a caricaturish ’super soft idli’ enthusiast in its unintentionally comical commercial. Moreover, there’s definitely no trace of Vidya Balan’s ’Good morning Mumbai’ brand of voice to be found.

Aishwarya Rai

Aishwarya Rai in Lakme

Unlike Balan, there’s nothing awkward or raw about Ash in this sleek ’She’s got the look’ Lakme nail colour ad, shot in the early days of her career. Not only does she look super stunning in those innumerable wardrobe/hair/cosmetic changes but actually serves the purpose behind the whole glamorous deal -- make the product inviting to its discerning viewer. Why in the world would this woman not be destined for big things?

Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone in Limca

Remember the Om Shanti Om girl in a just-woke-up, groggy state in PJs before she pastes some Close Up on her brush and enters Jim Carrey mode? Or better still, her guzzling down chilled Limca while getting drenched in pouring rain, in the middle of a road trip? Both the commercials have the model-turned-actress at her make-up-less, innocent best distinguishing Ms Padukone from her glitzy avatars on silver screen.

Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor in Pepsi

Long before Shahid developed a pumped up physique and groomed himself into a handsome young fella, he demonstrated us what the much-loathed ’awkward’ phase is all about as a star-struck adolescent dancing his way into the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai team -- Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji with some help from a catchy slogan, Yeh dil maange more. The commercial came out soon after the roaring success of Karan Johar’s emotional romance and did a swell job of bringing Shiamak Davar’s favourite dancer in public eye.

Anushka Sharma and Arjan Bajwa

Anushka Sharma and Arjan Bajwa in Palio Stile

Before making their Bollywood debuts, in the same year, opposite biggies like Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra respectively, this duo collaborated on a mushy ’n’ musical commercial. But it’s only after Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Fashion came out that one could put names to the faces of Anushka Sharma and Arjun Bajwa playing the quintessential lovebirds in a car vs train, Aradhana-inspired ’Mere sapno ki rani’ scenario.

Minissha Lamba

Minissha Lamba in Cadburys

Main khush hoon aaj khaamka, lingers the melody of Cadburys through various feel-good sequences, one of which includes Minissha Lamba (looking very different with straightened hair) in a pretty floral dress having a chocolate-filled conversation with herself.

Genelia D’Souza

Genelia D’Souza in Parker pen

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’s free-spirited Aditi isn’t the real star of this ad. Amitabh Bachchan is. Even so, as the Big B goes about signing autographs for the swooning teenager’s doodhwala and paperwala, the visibly excited, Is-this-really-happening? expression on Genelia ’s countenance is just about priceless.

Preity Zinta goes Angelina Jolies Way

Prei

Preity Zinta has gone for the conditional adoption of 34 orphans from the Mother Miracle school in Rishikesh.

Reluctant to speak Preity says, "It’s true. I’ve adopted these 34 girls. I’ll be looking after their entire upbringing from education to food, clothes, etc. You’ve no idea how wonderful it feels to hear the excited chatter of all those girls together as they welcome you into their lives. Believe you me, it’s the best birthday song I’ve ever heard."

Preity doesn’t intend to be a sleeper parent for the girls at the Mother Miracle . "No way! Those are my children now, my responsibility. I’ll be constantly connected with them and I’ll visit them in Rishikesh twice a year."

Far from finishing off her responsibility after financing these girl children, Preity plans to progressively enhance her social responsibilities.

"For a while now I’ve been thnking of what to do to help the less privileged classes specially the girl child. The horrors of foeticide and rampant child abuse are not just screaming news headlines for me. They’re voices that scream from inside me.

And I had to listen to them. These 34 girls are just a beginning. I plan to adopt a couple more every year during my birthday. I can’t think of a better gift to myself."

Dostana 2 will take the two friends from Miami to Punjab

dostana

K Jo’s funny treatment of homosexuality was quite appreciated with ‘Dostana’. In spite of a few minor objections here and there

It was fun to watch out the antics of two straight men pretending to be gays and now the fun will continue in the sequel to the last year’s comic hit.

Well, nobody thought about a sequel to the film, while making ‘Dostana ’, but producer Karan Johar and director Tarun Mansukhani are currently looking forward to making another version of the gay comedy considering the response to the movie.

Director Tarun Mansukhani is still working on the plot as he wants to make a sequel just for the sake of it. He wants a gripping story to support him.

Abhishek and John Abraham, the hit ‘couple’ will be there. Abhishek thinks ‘Dostana’ is like a brand and one needs to make a sequel to the film.

However, the story of Priyanka Chopra and Bobby Deol who united towards the film’s end finishes and a fresh new female face is most likely to be a part of the story. The styling of the film is likely to be good much like most K Jo films.

The story of ‘Dostana 2’ will take the two friends from Miami to Punjab and they clarify to everyone that they aren’t gays, but much like ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ (but of course in a bigger way) they are unintentionally caught in such situations and no one believes them.

Now this sounds exciting.K Jo would sure have enough ideas to share with his director.
